The Sioux Lookout Zone Family Physicians are independent contractors and members of a not-for-profit corporation which employs its own clinic and support staff.

We are funded jointly by the Ministry of Health & Long Term Care and Health Canada, with funding channeled through the Sioux Lookout First Nations Health Authority. Funding levels are for 15 full time equivalent physicians. We fill these positions with a blend of full and part-time contract physicians respecting their desire for a work-life balance and leaving room for locum support. Some of our contract physicians live in Sioux Lookout; others live elsewhere in Canada and commute. All of us work in the hospital and provide service to one or two consistent northern communities.

Physicians can sign on with the SLZFPA as individuals or as personal corporations (or you can provide your services as a locum). The contract physician compensation package, based on education and experience, includes:

  • Compensation Grid: $254,400 - 287,400 for full-time, full scope
  • Full-time contract is 43 work weeks per year
  • Part-time or job sharing work arrangements are available
  • CME - $3,400 per year (pro-rated for part-time)
  • No overhead

We offer flexible, innovative work arrangements. We enjoy a workload ceiling averaging 52 scheduled hours per week. Contract physicians travel north up to five days a month, conducting clinics and assisting nurses in the northern nursing stations. The rest of the time we are providing care to inpatients, working in the ER, clinic and providing support to the northern nurses by phone. Physicians who wish to practice obstetrics can make separate arrangements with the hospital.
